WALK & TALK ACTION RESEARCH
Walk and Talks are an invitation and supportive way for members of a community to come together for a ‘stroll’ and a conversation. We already know they’re good for our wellbeing but what happens when we apply them in the workplace to support cognitive processing?
💡 We need to do the focused as well as diffused types of learning together in order for it to be effective and walking serves as that ‘diffused’ learning part, encouraging blood flow to the brain, cerebral blood flow leading to better concentration and energy levels.
🌳 Walk and Talks also bring you outside of buildings that may feel ‘owned’ or manifest power.
🎊 Being alongside, without having to look someone directly in the eyes as in a traditional meeting can break down ingrained dynamics between organisations, their communities or individuals.
Olivia Bellas FRSA and I recently designed and delivered an action research project involving a ‘Civic Creativity Insights Group’ and we are excited to share our ‘Things to Consider’ hand-out. This is a high level set of prompts to help you prepare for and design a Walk & Talk experience, specific to a workplace setting. This hand-out comes out at the end of the first phase of our research.
We are looking to raise further funding to help us and potential partners develop a Walk & Talk playbook which will support organisations interested in using this technique to shift how they meet and work. In the meantime we are keen to receive feedback as people test out our prompts, so if that is you, feel free to email us civic.creativity@gmail.com with any comments/questions.
